When did you open your shop and also when did you start stocking NB?
We opened the OVERKILL shop in 2003 and started stocking NB in 2004.
What/who inspired you to start retailing?
Our obsession with Sneakers and Niklas Beckert who opened the first Sneaker Store in Berlin called ‘Mad Flavor’!
What made you pick high end street wear to form your concept around?
We were always in touch with the Berlin underground lifestyle and with the urban culture development in all sorts of aspects of music, fashion and street culture since we founded the OVERKILL graffiti magazine in 1992. That’s why we started to sell shoes and clothing that came from that cultural background as well.
What is unique about your retail?
Our claim is ‘Sneakers & Graffiti’ and selling both in the same store with the best selection and variety in Berlin makes us unique.
What has changed since you opened it?
We started as a 60m2 store space and grew in 2008 to a two-floor apartment/showroom store with 250m2 space now. From the beginning we featured big brands like New Balance, Adidas, Nike, Puma and others but we also laid a big focus on small T-Shirt labels like Lemar & Dauley, Married To The Mob, Orchard Street and other brands that were very famous at the time and that you then were not able to buy anywhere else but at our store. Also then in 2006 we started our online shop: overkillshop.com
What is your perception of NB as a brand?
To us New Balance is one of the leading sneaker brands on the market. Within the field of sport shoes it stands for high quality materials and good craftsmanship in general. It shows a very stable product line that customers are very happy about. There is no sneaker market today without New Balance and it stands as a big part of the sneaker culture.
If you were a NB shoe, which one would you be and why?
There are so many good and different styles in the NB archive, it’s not easy to say which one is the absolute number one. Our favorite models are the original versions of the 1500, the 997, 996, 530 and the 577.
What do you like about Flimby made shoes?
New Balance products from Flimby do have very good quality, the shoes feature very nice shapes and do show very good craftsmanship. This is exactly what the customer needs.
What shoe do you wish NB would bring back?
We wish that NB would produce a remake of the original M997.
Do you have a favourite NB collaboration?
The OVERKILL X NEW BALANCE ‘Berlin Wall Pack’!
What is your favourite current Flimby shoe?
Our favourite shoe is the NB 577. Here at OVERKILL there is a huge request for this model.
